Buying shoes from another country sounds simple until the box arrives and nothing fits. A size 8 in the United States is not a size 8 in the United Kingdom, and neither one matches the numbers you see on a pair from Italy or Japan. Every region built its own measuring system over the years, so the same foot can wear three or four different numbers depending on where the shoes were made. This converter exists to take that confusion off your plate before you spend any money.

The tool above works in both directions. Enter the size you already know, tell it which country that number comes from, and it shows you the matching sizes everywhere else, plus the actual foot length in centimeters. That last number is the one worth trusting most, because a foot measured in centimeters does not change no matter which label a brand prints on the box. If you are ever unsure, measure your foot from heel to longest toe and use the centimeter column as your anchor.

Why shoe sizes never seem to agree

The US and UK systems both grew out of an old English standard based on barleycorns, which is why their numbers sit close together but never line up exactly. There is usually about half a size between a UK number and its US equivalent. Europe went a different way entirely and measures in Paris points, which is why EU sizes climb in larger steps and rarely land on a round US number. Japan and much of Asia skipped the codes altogether and simply use the foot length in centimeters, which is honestly the most sensible approach of them all.

Common questions

Is a US shoe size the same as a UK size?

No. For adults there is roughly a half to one full size difference, with UK numbers running smaller than US numbers. A US men's 9 is about a UK 8, for example.

How do I measure my foot in centimeters?

Stand on a sheet of paper, mark the back of your heel and the tip of your longest toe, then measure the distance between the two marks. That length in centimeters is the most reliable size to convert from.

Should I size up or down when converting?

If your converted size lands between two numbers, size up. A slightly roomy shoe is far more comfortable than one that pinches.

Do men's and women's sizes convert between each other?

Yes. In US sizing a women's size is generally about 1.5 sizes larger than the men's number for the same foot. EU sizing uses one scale for both, which makes it easier to compare.
